Stick Making 19 - 20 November 2010   20/11/2010   Click Here To Book

with Eddie Carr

The craft of Stick Making has made enormous strides in recent years throughout Ireland.  It is an all year round activity, from harvesting the sticks in mid-winter to entering finished sticks in summer shows and fairs where Eddie is a familiar figure.

These courses are open to everyone, women and men, beginners and those with some experience and particularly for those who enjoy working alongside other stick makers.

Participants will be shown methods for straightening shanks, joining the handle, sanding down, fitting a brass ferrule and finishing with wax or varnish.

A complete range of components will be available for purchase, but members will be encouraged to bring their own materials and basic equipment; rasps and files, electric drills, sander, small saw and a folding workbench with a small vice fitted.  However, beginners with no equipment will be welcome, as there will be a full range of tools available on a shared basis.

Allow £5 – £10 for materials for one completed stick, but more experienced stick makers intending to use rams horns, buffalo horns or antlers should allow up to £25 for materials.
